Zoey has been in her furever home for two weeks! So we thought it was time for her first pupdate.
On the very first day, she puked once on the flight, and twice on the car ride back home. She would not eat at first, so we let her rest for a while. After waking up, she was able to eat pumpkin puree and chicken. We were so thankful when she took her first bite!
The first night with Zoey was a complete nightmare. While we tried to normalize the crate on her first day home, it was not enough for her to want to go in there for bed time. She whined a ton and woke us up in the middle of the night. While all of that was expected, it was not fun to deal with. We continued to work on normalizing the crate for the next two days, and she was able to sleep through the night without whining starting the second night. However, on the second and third night she would still whine for a good half hour before actually falling asleep. We soon learned that we did not exercise her enough before bedtime for her to be tired and just fall asleep when she got into the crate. We’re very thankful that she pretty quickly started to sleep through the night so that we don’t have to wake up at 3AM. However, we do still wake up early at around 7 AM to 8 AM to let her out of her crate in the morning to potty and eat breakfast.
Now onto potty training. She is honestly a gem when it comes to potty training. We bought a litter box and put timothy grass pellets in it as her potty spot. At first, we were going to use grass patches and potty pads for her indoor potty training, but grass patches tend to get expensive and puppies tend to like to bite on potty pads which lead to blockages in their systems. The breeder mentioned that they were using timothy grass pellets already, so we thought we would continue it so it would be easier. Best. Decision. Ever! Aside from her leaking pee when too excited, she has not had many potty accidents. We did buy Nature’s Miracle to clean up her occasional accidents, and it works as a miracle.
Zoey went to her first vet visit one week after coming home, and it was a pleasant experience. Unfortunately, due to the state of the world right now, we were unable to be with her for the actual examination. However, the vet said she was a healthy puppy and did well with being touched. Those desensitizing activities with her must’ve really helped. Ears, paws, face, belly, everything!
Our friends came to visit her and she’s gone to two puppy play sessions for safe socialization. She has walked around twice outside at an empty sidewalk where there are no dogs, and even went to Home Depot in a cart. We’re having so much fun teaching her basic obedience and different tricks. Here are some of the things she’s been learning! Can’t wait to add more to the list.
